My main problems with Wesnoth's current system are that there's nothing the player can do to affect the randomness and also that high (60-70%) "chance-to-dodge" terrain values are common for many units, meaning that most attacks miss.Įven 50% chance to dodge values are common, which means attacks are a literal coin-flip. You can not please everyone, that is totally fine.Īnd a very positive rating on the game is pretty great, so everything pans out in my eyes. The point is, that this feedback has been given probably since conception of the game, there is no reason to assume that reviews like these were not expected. In reality that does not pan out outside of obscenely rare cases, but that does not change the fact that it is perceived as such.Įither way, the negative reviews are a necessary and valid way to inform potential players and how they say it is a solely semantic argument as those who will react to a review like this, will most likely agree that there is merit in the randomness being unfair. The reflection of that is in writing negative reviews and mentioning the RNG which was unfair to them and they are correct if they use "fairness" as a measurement they could have lost randomly not because of skill. However since forever and clearly since people played wesnoth humans had felt that randomness is biased against them if they loose. And just as all the dwarves in Dwarf Fortress are slaves to Armok, every unit in Wesnoth is one of Murphy's stooges. It's doing its own thing in its own way, and has done since about 2005. But Wesnoth is intentionally not like chess, or Starcraft, or any of a thousand other games. If you don't LIKE that kind of gameplay, that's fine, and it's totally your prerogative. Wesnoth's warriors, even the heroes among them, all have feet of clay. Things going wrong like that is deeply baked into the game. As a general you have to learn to cope with your 'dead certain' attack failing at a key point. and that there is never any such thing as a sure result. īut the core part of the Wesnoth game - in fact it's part of the game's intended DESIGN and its major unique selling point - is that attacks are probabilistic.

And quite frankly there's a lot of experienced players who still moan about it too it IS infuriating sometimes, and there are less-luck and no-luck mods that try to eliminate the problem. But inexperienced reviewers, dumping on the game after only a few hours' play, generally haven't. Experienced Wesnoth players have learned this lesson the hard way.

Check the source code if you don't believe me. Human biases - confirmation bias and survivorship bias in particular - cause us to focus in on these rare events, and conclude that the RNG is rigged against us. If it's in your favour, you'll barely notice. If it doesn't happen, something's wrong! If it's against you, you'll complain about it. So it's quite possible for a 0.65% chance - wildly improbable, MUST be a cheating AI - to show up multiple times during a campaign. A big battle might have ten times that number.

That's not damage I'm talking about that's 200-300 separate attack and counter-attack rolls. Even a short Wesnoth battle between a couple of dozen units could require 200-300 attacks between them. When your mage with a 70% hit chance misses four times, and then the archer with 30% chance to hit hits three times, it's got to be the darned biased RNG, right? That's less than a 0.65% chance! So why do so many people believe it, and feel strongly enough to write a negative review? Well, sorry, but it's because humans suck at estimating probabilities. To conceal something sneaky in there that reliably rigged things against the player, when the player side isn't even necessarily side one would be a fitting challenge for the Underhanded C Code competition. That's because every time a unit is attacked, it gets a chance to counter-attack. At the core of the game engine, BOTH sides use the same random attack code, every time EITHER side attacks the other.
